Activist Jan Eichhorn founded Jan's Tutoring House, then called Friends of Tyler School, in 1990 to help inner city kids unlock their potential and graduate.
Jan's Tutoring House pairs DC-area children in need of academic support and encouragement with volunteer mentors. Mentors provide one-on-one tutoring and opportunities to develop positive community values. Jan's Tutoring House also offers an after-school and summer camp program that help reinforce these goals.
Our volunteers, board and staff believe that...
Education is a shared responsibility among students, parents, teachers, and community
Students should be challenged to acquire the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to be caring, productive, and successful individuals
Children thrive in an atmosphere that is respectful, safe, and welcoming
We can facilitate meaningful learning by addressing the needs of individual students
Mentors can foster character development and self-esteem to empower each child to accomplish their educational goals
Jan's Tutoring House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is funded by direct contributions from members of the community, foundation grants and corporate giving programs.
